Frequently-Asked Questions
Question Answer
Do you adopt outside the state of Florida? As a rule, no. Nor do we ship dogs. As part of our adoption process, we require a home visit. Out-of-state adoption make that difficult and expensive.

I submitted my application days ago. Why is it taking so long? Coastal Poodle Rescue is entirely volunteer-based, which means that the approval process is being performed by people working in their spare time. Please be patient.

Each application must be checked thoroughly, including contacting references. Sometimes references are difficult to reach.

Also, it's very helpful if you provide as much information as possible, as accurately as possible. If you've omitted any of the information we asked for, it takes even longer to process your application. In fact, applications with missing data often go to the bottom of the pile.

Where do you get your dogs? Dogs come to us from a variety of sources. Some are from puppy mill raids, others are surrendered to us by their owners. A large number come from animal control shelters, where they were not able to be adopted for any number of reasons.

Why are most of your dogs older? It's an unfortunate fact, but true. Regretably, many dog owners have not planned for the medical needs for their dogs as they age. Some are simply incapable of extending the same unconditional loyalty to their dogs as their dogs have given so selflessly to them.

Also, shelters can only keep a dog for a short period of time before they must euthanize the dog if it does not get adopted. Coastal Poodle Rescue, then, tends to care for those that are older and more difficult to adopt.

You spend a lot of money on animals. Why don't you spend that money on humans instead? We believe that we humans are caretakers of the earth's animals. For dogs in particular, humankind has bred the dog into a being completely dependent upon us for its social needs and its care. In exchange, dogs give their loyalty and love unconditionally. While the dog has kept up its part of the bargain, sadly, humans have not always done so.

Furthermore, each and every dog has brought love, light and the lessons of unconditional love into their new household. Just read a few of our happy endings to realize how profoundly a dog's love can impact the life of its new owner.

Why would anyone surrender their dog? There are myriad reasons and circumstances leading to owners surrendering their dogs over to rescue shelters. Some may include:
  • poor or deteriorating health (either the dog, its owner or both)
  • an undesirable temperament change in the dog
  • a change in an owners work schedule (excessive hours or travel)
  • moving to rented property where pets are not permitted
  • the responsibility of pet ownership became too much
  • the dog does not get along well with other pets in the household
  • the dog has become aggressive with children
  • can no longer financially afford to care for the dog properly
  • owner cannot seem to housebreak the dog
  • dog being abused by other family member(s)
  • bought the dog on a whim, didn't really want a dog
  • no longer fits in with the owners lifestyle
Far better for the owner to responsibly turn the dog over to a reputable rescue, than to dump the dog in an abandoned lot. Even shelters cannot ensure that a dog will be adopted, but rescues will make every effort to ensure the dog lives the rest of its life as happily as possible.

After caring for and nursing your foster dogs, it must be hard to let them go to new homes. How can you possibly say good-bye? Many foster parents consider this their way of "giving back." They see the joy that the dog brings to its new family, and the happiness and security of a forever home for the dog.

More importantly, if you keep one, that is one less you can foster. You will miss out on multiple happy endings with each foster you keep instead of adopting out.

Finally, it's all about the dog. The dog needs to be in the home that is the best possible choice for him or her. Foster parents cannot afford them all, but even if they could, they know that the dog belongs in the best possible placement. Read some of our Happy Endings for an idea of some truly miraculous placements made by Coastal Poodle Rescue.
