Meet Maggie Mae, she is a High-Cost Canine.

Meet Maggie Mae. Maggie Mae came to us in August from a shelter. She had been returned, and that is a death sentence at this shelter. She had been returned matted, and from her picture you can imagine the fleas etc. We got her cleaned up, which sadly required us to shave her down to the skin. We looked over her paperwork-the shelter had spayed her-TWICE in 2 months (so much for record keeping)! The paperwork said Maggie Mae was returned because she had a fatty tumor. Once shaved she did not have a tumor we could find, we did find she had Kennel Cough and drank and urinated an extreme amount. Given a little time, medication and loving care, she recooperated.

During her routine exam blood work was drawn to check her over thoroughly. All was well except her calcium was sky high. The vet found this very odd, this is not good. A small bump was then found on her thyroid. We did our research and the doctor told us not to panic as the information would be scary and rarely is cancer (worse case) the problem. We determined to do surgery to remove the lump. (see stitches below)

The tissue was sent out for analysis and don't worry this rarely is cancer he says. Well, much to his surprise, so much so he sent out for another report, it was cancer. But the good news, the margins were clear, and there was no evidence of metastasis. It was Maggie's lucky day, because we had gotten the cancer before it had a chance to spread! The vet is confident that he was able to get the entire mass. You would have never known this dog had surgery from the day we brought her home! She took it in stride. She is on thyroid supplements because 1/2 of her thyroid had to be removed during the surgery, but all further blood work is looking perfect. She should always be on a harness due to the surgery, so she has a nice soft pink one to show off in! (Thanks to foster mom go here!)

Maggie is an energetic, exuberant, FUN dog. She loves to retrieve, walks perfect on a leash, and plays with dogs her size or bigger very well. She will sit on her bottom to take a treat gently from you (see picture below). She is excellent with all humans, but may bark at men for awhile until she gets to know them. Her favorite thing in the world is a long belly rub. She makes the best foot warmer in the world, preferring the floor near you to the couch. But she wants to sleep on your feet in the bed!! If you would like to sponsor Maggie, please do! Your sponsorships help us pay the bills these dog incur, little Maggie will live a long life due to the wonders of the human heart, giving of time and money to help these little creatures.
